Introduction

The mathematical analysis of an image can give rise to different informations that would have been very difficult or impossible to discriminate by human eyes and/or by "hand". For instance, alignments of objects, size distribution, number of particles, length etc..

Software

One can use various software (freeware such as NIH image (Mac)) for image analysis. Nevertheless, both Photoshop 5.5 with The Image processing Tool Kit 3.0 and AnalySiS 3.0 are used at the Particle Lab (WIN NT4).

Analysis 3.0 is available at the particle lab and is under a network license. That means that anyone at the EAWAG who needs it, can load it into his or her computer and runs it from there (The license is restricted to 2 users at the same time. So please, terminate the session after calculations). All the image treatments are easily achieved with Photoshop without any plug-ins.

Applications

Most of the images are obtained by microscopy (Electron or optical). Nevertheless, one can use image analysis for many other purposes such as gel-chromatography analysis, photography from fieldwork, etc....

The recognition of shapes, alignment, lines, other features or properties can be calculated step by step but automation (macros) is also possible for repetitive work.
